Domestic violence is a crime and it can turn deadly, if it is allowed to continue.

 According to the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) of Northern Michigan, women in abusive relationships look to themselves as the source for change of their partner’s behavior. Women, however, in abusive relationships do everything possible to please their partners and adjust to the ever-changing demands.

 The experts at WRC say that these women may very well have dinner on time, keep up the house, hold down a job, wear their clothes and their hair the way their partner likes, and have little contact with family and friends. Then with his next whim, typically accompanied by abuse such as name-calling, throwing things, threats or physical violence, she is expected to change again or face the consequences.

 Domestic abuse is not about arguments, late dinners, too many bills, anger, or losing control — it is about a batterer’s desire to keep control and power. Any other explanation is an excuse, according to WRC.

 Renee Shelman, a legal advocate at the YWCA of Greater Flint for the past seven years, said they refer to domestic violence victims, as “survivors” and the majority of the survivors she works with are women. The YWCA does work with some male survivors, but it is much more prevalent for the male to be the batterer.

 Through optional counseling, Shelman and her colleagues focus on empowering these women. “They do have the ability to make great choices. They chose to stay safe and do what’s necessary to survive,” she said.

 An important aspect of their treatment is to make the survivors understand that there is nothing wrong with them. “They don’t have to be fixed. Domestic violence is not their fault,” Shelman said.

 Shelman said there is a difference between domestic violence and anger management. With anger management, the individual would focus their anger on anyone, such as through road rage or bar fights.

 With domestic violence, it is a power and control issue. “They do it because they can and to get what they want,” she said. Lack of confidence and low self-esteem are common character traits and these individuals use intimidation to get the survivor to comply with their demands.

 To help understand the difference, Shelman gives an example about a couple attending a party. The woman chats casually with another man while her partner says nothing, even though he has become quite jealous. He holds his anger until they arrive home.

 Although alcohol and drugs can escalate a domestic violence situation, they are not the underlying cause, said Shelman. She said the alcohol oftentimes acts as “liquid encouragement.”

  Not all children growing up in an abusive environment turn out to be abusive. Shelman said children are resilient. While some boys, who have witnessed their father abuse their mother, turn out to be just like their father, some vow later in life to never behave in that way. It’s very important to have a supportive environment and a positive role model for these children to express their thoughts to, such as a teacher, pastor, or neighbor.

 One important message Shelman has learned through the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Intervention Program is that there really is no good reason why someone hits or abuses another. “They do give reasons, but there’s no good reason.

 “They do it because they can, to get their way and to get what they want.” She said these individuals could be described as spoiled brats.

  Typically, survivors are on the receiving end of domestic violence six to eight times before they leave for good.

 A misconception of domestic violence is that it is more prevalent with low-income or uneducated people. “Domestic violence crosses all lines. It’s prevalent in all ethnicities, religions, race, economic status. We’ve seen it all. We have survivors who are college educated with careers here.”

  If anyone recognizes him or herself as the abuser, there is help. Shelman urges anyone who may be prone to committing domestic violence, to seek help with a therapist. “Call the hotline to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program. Definitely seek help.

 “There’s no good ending to domestic violence. You’ll either end up in jail or hurting her very badly.”

A vengeful young mom was caught on tape admitting she suffocated her baby boy, stuffed him inside a diaper bag and tossed him into the trash in a jealous rage, police said.

Elizabeth Johnson of Tempe, Ariz. is accused of kidnapping and child abuse of her son, Gabriel, who was 8-months-old when he was last seen alive the day after Christmas last year in Texas.

Johnson has repeatedly denied she killed Gabriel, insisting instead she gave the child away to a mystery couple in San Antonio.

But, according to a recorded phone call with Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary, on Dec. 27, Johnson allegedly admitted she killed her son because McQueary's Facebook page mentioned he was talking to other women.

"Gabriel is in the dumpster, I killed him this morning," Johnson allegedly says on the tape McQueary made and gave to cops last year.

"You want to talk to girls, that's the price you pay," she said before detailing how she callously killed the baby, according to the recording. "I suffocated him, he turned blue and that's when I put him in his diaper bag and put him in the trash can."

"You left me with no choice," Johnson allegedly adds. "You'd be surprised what a person will do if you push them enough." 

The parents were in the middle of a bitter custody dispute when Gabriel disappeared. Johnson fled to San Antonio with Gabriel and stayed with him in a motel room before allegedly giving him away, a babysitter told  News.

Analisa Urias said Johnson hired her off Craigslist to watch Gabriel in the room under orders to not answer the door and to give the baby medicine "if he started crying to shut him up."

Johnson's grandfather defended her, saying she took back the gruesome statements from the phone conversation.

"This isn't doing Elizabeth any good at all," Bob Johnson told the Arizona Republic last week. "Logan is the only one who has access to [the tape] outside of the police."

He also said Gabriel was given away to a couple from Texas, though the pair has yet to be identified.

Elizabeth Johnson gave cops a vague description of Gabriel's alleged adoptive parents, saying the man was tall with dark hair and the woman was average height with blond hair. Both are white and in their 30s, she said,  News reported.

Johnson remains locked up with no bond in a Phoenix-area jail.

WikiLeaks' Julian Assange turns on the Guardian after paper leaks info on his alleged sexual assault

Old friends are quickly becoming Julian Assange's new enemies.

The founder of the controversial whistleblower website WikiLeaks slammed British newspaper The Guardian for "selectively" publishing intimate details about his alleged sexual assaults against two women.

The newspaper was one of a handful given first access to secret U.S. documents in exchange for helping WikiLeaks edit the files.

"The leak of the police report to The Guardian was clearly designed to undermine my bail application," the 39-year-old Australian told rival newspaper The Times on Tuesday. "It was timed to come up on the desk of the judge that morning."
 
 Assange, who is fighting extradition to Sweden - where he's wanted for questioning about rape and molestation allegations - blasted the timing of the leak, arguing it was given to the publication a day before his bail hearing last week. 
 
 Speaking in the third person, Assange added, "Someone in authority clearly intended to keep Julian in prison, and shopped [the report] to other newspapers as well."
 
Assange is out on bail and under house arrest in England. He is accused by two women of refusing to wear a condom during sex and being tested for STDs. 
 
He has vehemently denied the charges, calling them a "smear campaign" against him and WikiLeaks for releasing top-secret documents.
 
He told The Times that the women were motivated by revenge, money and police pressure.
 
His lawyer, Bjorn Hurtig, has said he plans to lodge a complaint and demand that Swedish authorities investigate how classified material was leaked. 
 
The Guardian has defended its coverage, arguing Assange was given several days to respond. 
 
In editorial, the newspaper wrote it's "unusual for a sex-offense case to be presented outside of the judicial process in such a manner, but then it is unheard of for a defendant, his legal team and supporters to so vehemently and publicly attack women at the heart of a rape case."

Unhealthy lifestyle means the average woman looks four years older .

If you have ever taken comfort in the saying ‘you are only as old as you feel’, you are not alone. 

But new research has revealed that unhealthy lifestyles are fuelling a premature ageing epidemic with the average woman looking more than four years older than their actual age. 

Despite many of us wanting to look 10 years younger, an alarming survey shows we are not helping ourselves to stay youthful. 

According to a poll of 8,000 women over 25, unhealthy habits including smoking, drinking, eating junk food, using sun beds and not looking after our skin, is making women old before their time.

The results indicated that modern lifestyles are having a detrimental effect on looks, making women look 4.25 years older than they actually were. 

Recently clean living Jennifer Aniston, age 41, topped the list of celebrities who look best for their age, while party animal Amy Winehouse, 27, was voted the celebrity who looks the worst for her age.In this image-conscious age, the survey also uncovered that a quarter of women spend 10 minutes a day worrying about their ageing, adding up to two and half days every year. 

Women in the North East are ageing the fastest, feeling that they look an average of six years older than their years, which is no surprise considering they also smoke and drink the most, use sun beds and a third regularly go out in the sun without wearing any protection.

While scientists did not analyse participants’ skin, the group were asked what age they felt they looked.

The questions revealed that one in five don’t use moisturiser, 40 per cent regularly go out in the sun without any SPF protection, a quarter eat junk food two to three times a week and the average woman drinks 448 units of alcohol and smokes 894 cigarettes a year. 

Dr Ravi Jain, from the Riverbanks Clinic, in Bedfordshire, said his mantra was to stub out the cigarettes and wear sun protection every day. 

He also encouraged drinking lots of water and eating berries to stop going over the hill prematurely.

Woman writes of failing marriage

Manjit Panghali's writings reveal the thoughts of a depressed woman who was doing her best to try and fix a broken marriage.


"I can't do it. I can't take it any more. It is always my fault. He is just so awesome, so right, so powerful, so witty, so charming in everyone else's eyes -- not mine. He is much bigger than me. I cannot compete with him. He makes me feel powerless, so hopeless, so scared," she wrote in an undated notebook entry.


The writings, entered as an exhibit at the trial of Manjit's husband, Mukhtiar, were available for members of the media to view Monday.


Mukhtiar Panghali's trial on charges of second-degree murder and interfering with a dead body ended earlier this month in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster.


Manjit, 31, disappeared after attending a prenatal yoga class in south Surrey on Oct. 18, 2006. She was four months pregnant with her second child. Her burned remains were found off Deltaport Way five days later.
The writings used at Panghali's trial included copied pages from notebooks, letters and a card. They appeared to be written to herself, her husband and her unborn child.


"I am writing today because I thought I would never let myself get to this point. I am clinically depressed and am on medication. I am so scared I am going to get addicted . . . I am feeling very emotional and overwhelmed with life and all the obstacles it is throwing at me," Manjit wrote in an undated notebook entry.
"My husband does not give me the support I need from him. Our communication has gone out the window . . . I think I have hurt him so bad physically and mentally."


In an entry from Jan. 12, 2005, Manjit wrote that she was crying all day and wanted to call Panghali but "he wouldn't understand."


"I am trying my best, my hardest, 199 per cent, to make things work. I have every book imaginable. I am readying and reacting and trying hard to implement what I am reading. Trying to stay positive. Trying, trying, trying."


Manjit often wrote of her dreams and plans for a happy marriage and wondered what happened to her relationship.


"We have taken each other for granted and our pride has come in the way of our hearts. We have hurt each other's emotions," Manjit wrote in an undated card to Panghali.


In May 2005, she wrote that she needed to stay connected to Panghali, "Make him love me again like he once did."


"There was a time when MP thought I was the most [nice] and caring person he knew. Why has that changed -- it's the disease," Manjit wrote.


The disease that she speaks of is alcoholism, something she dealt with by attending Al-Anon meetings.
In a letter to "MP" dated Feb. 15, Manjit wrote, "And I definitely don't want to bring another child into this chaos. The chaos can be simple: you drink and I don't know how to cope. You let us down by not being around. You get upset and mean. You're unreasonable and unreliable."


Justice Heather Holmes is scheduled to deliver her verdict in the trial on Jan. 14.

What does feminism want to be when it grows up?

The woman above holding the sign is protesting on behalf of N.O.W., who is suing the Hooters restaurant chain in San Francisco claiming that the use of waitresses in camel toe cut offs and t-shirts constitutes the illegal provision of "adult entertainment." They've added a lot of save the children rhetoric to the PR end of the lawsuit.

Save the children from scantily clad women? Are you kidding me? Is this really N.O.W., or is it Families First? Maybe it's some deranged splinter group of the Moral Majority fronting the ugliest of their womenfolk as feminists.

At any rate, this can't be modern feminism. They buried the rest of the second wavers with Dworkin's fat, undoubtedly pockmarked ass, right? The third wave is here, right in our depraved male faces. But you would not know it from their silence about this story.

Where is the outrage of the super sluts, whose idea of feminist empowerment is picking up folded dollar bills from a dirty dance floor using their cracks of their asses?

That picture, though, is a hoot, if you'll pardon the pun. It's proof positive that in the wild and wacky world of modern western culture, being butt ugly and bitter about it is still grounds for litigation. Wanna bet the area directly behind that sign is as hooterless as the facially challenged nut cases at N.O.W. would like all women to be?

Personally, I won't eat at Hooters because they assume I am stupid enough to pay too much for chicken wings because they are served up by some bimbo in a tight t-shirt.  But I never thought of calling a lawyer over it.

Seriously though (at least as serious as one can be about this kind of law suit), what does feminism want to be when it grows up?

Right now, there seems to be a split between women that want to fellate their way to financial mediocrity while the world says, "You go, grrl," and the desperate last members of the old guard, who were at least smart enough to see that ridiculing and politically pussy whipping men in power was a lot more profitable.

Could there be conflicts in their future, or are they just enjoying the way that mixed messages have always kept a world trying to please them off balance?

Whatever the answer is, I have something to say to Ma Kettle holding the sign: You are half right.  You are not a decoration. However, the women to your right, are.

Family alleges harassment under marital terror law

Navi Mumbai: Even as a Rajya Sabha committee has invited citizens views and suggestions on the nonbailable section 498A of Indian Penal Code often dubbed marital terrorism a family in New Panvel is experiencing it first-hand,and has decided to write to it about their bitter experience.

My 70-year-old father,Katta Swamy,who is suffering from medical problems is in jail for one month because of a false complaint lodged by my sister-in-law,Katta Sai Jyothi,under the non-bailable 498A of the IPC, said Laxmi Katta (32).She and her aged mother,Katta Satyanarayanan,are worried about getting arrested themselves on the basis of cruelty and dowry demands.

In an affidavit submitted to the police and court,the girl and her family alleged that the Kattas had demanded dowry and humiliated the bride and her family.They also alleged that the Kattas beat up the girl and her relatives.

The Upper House committee,which has received hundreds of suggestions from harried citizens,has set a December 31 deadline,before taking a decision on whether 498A should be amended.

P Suresh,president of the Bangalore NGO,National Family Harmony Society,is helping the Kattas along with many others jailed under this section.He said,The police state that they are helpless against 498A,and have to arrest anyone named by the complainant.However,we have come across cases where the complainant and police have joined hands to demand money from the inlaws under the threat of being jailed. Suresh said his NGO had first approached Parliament to amend the section.Children as young as seven and pregnant women have been arrested and locked up,because the daughter-in-law decided to use the strong section, he said.

Bombay HC lawyer Rahul Thakur said in over 90% marital cases he had come across,the Section had been misused.I know of a case where the wife slapped 498A on the husband because he criticized her cooking and did not talk to her properly, said Thakur,who has sent in his suggestions.

Thakur and other lawyers,however,pointed out that the section can be a boon for married women who are genuine victims of torture.The police should be honest and sensible enough to decide if the complaint holds water, said Thakur.
