Divorce Statistics in India

One of the highlights of the divorce rates in India is that it is one of the lowest across the globe. Out of 1,000 marriages in India, 11 marriages terminate in a divorce. These statistics were even lesser in 1990, when out of 1,000 marriages, just 7.4 marriages ended up in a divorce. Another aspect of the divorce statistics of this country is that the divorce rate is higher in the urban regions while very low in the rural area. In the 21st century, the divorce rates in the cities in India have been shooting up alarmingly. Delhi, the capital city of India, witnessed that the divorce rate doubled in five years. Bangalore, a very hi-tech city in India, experienced that the divorce rate tripled in 4 years. These are very shocking statistics, given the background, that the country is one of the most traditional places on the globe.
Effect of IT boom on Divorce Statistics in India
India is the favorite place for outsourcing in the world. The IT sector has provided a plethora of people very lucrative jobs. Simultaneously, it has been observed, that from 2003, the number of divorce cases related to this sector are increasing day by day. Bangalore is the major city related to IT sector. The following table is self-explanatory.

YearNumber of Divorce cases in Bangalore
2003283
2004526
2005946
20061,246
It is being gauged that the magnification in the number of divorce cases has occurred due to the following reasons –

  • Work pressure and stress
  • Economical security
  • Haphazard working hours
  • Lack of time to spend in the house with family
  • Financial freedom
The Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission has disclosed that in a majority of cases, the marital discord has stemmed from an unsatisfactory physical relationship. The Chairperson’s opinion is that as the people are viewing the computer screen for prolonged periods, this has led to impotency. Some psychiatrists have stated that the stress of the jobs has been responsible for the divorce rate enhancement.
Another noted city in the IT sector is Pune, which is in Maharashtra state and close to Mumbai. In 2006, 150 divorce cases on an average per month were recorded in this city. This number expanded to 240 cases a month in 2007. About 50 percent of these were as per mutual consent, the remaining were related to unilateral consent.
Effect of Independence of Women on Divorce Statistics in India
Since the last few years, the Indian women are getting educated and becoming capable of earning. They have developed the power to spend money and gain knowledge of their rights. The result is that they have become independent and consequently reluctant to adjust with the traditional views of their counterparts. The Indian women do not want to continue the same old rut that has persisted for centuries in the country. As they desire to explore more opportunities and experiment with this newly acquired independence, the divorce rate in India is increasing.
